Governor Fletcher Attends Celebration in Honor of Jerry Kanney of Interstate Natural Gas Company

Pikeville, KY - On Monday evening, October 25, 2007, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher attended a celebration in honor of Jerry Kanney, Co-owner of the Interstate Natural Gas Company of Pikeville. The celebration was in honor of Mr. Kanney’s recognition as a 2007 Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Findlay, Findlay, Ohio. Approximately 300 guests attended the event. Civic leaders and other local and state officials, including Governor Fletcher, made remarks about Mr. Kanney and his outstanding contributions to eastern KY and the energy field. Charles Baird, Attorney and Chairman of the Board of the Coal Operators and Associates, Inc. introduced Governor Fletcher.

Governor Fletcher, along with Dr. William Higginbotham, Executive Director of the Kentucky Coal Academy, presented thirty, $1,000 scholarships on behalf of the Kentucky Coal Academy to be used within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), Coal Academy programs. These scholarships are earmarked for use in gas and oil related training within KCTCS.

Governor Fletcher announced that these scholarships will lay the groundwork for the future working relationship between the coal industry and other fossil fuels.
