KY Coal Academy to host free initial and refresher mining trainings in Jan. 2017

Versailles, Ky. The Kentucky Coal Academy will host free initial and refresher mine emergency technician, surface and underground mining trainings through its program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) this January.

Unless noted otherwise, all classes are held 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at SKCTC s Harlan campus, 164 Ball Park Rd., on the second floor of the Mining Industry Building.

  • 40-hour Initial Mine Emergency Technician Training: Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Feb. 4; Middlesboro campus, 1300 Chichester Ave.
  • 24-hour Initial Surface Mining Training: Jan. 30, 31; Feb. 1, 2
  • 40-hour Initial Underground Mining Training: Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Feb. 4
  • 8-hour Mine Emergency Technician Refresher: Tuesday, Jan. 10; must have Kentucky MET Card
  • 8-hour Surface Mining Refresher: Tuesday, Jan. 24; must have Kentucky Surface Miners Card
  • 8-hour and/or 16-hr Underground Mining Refresher: Wednesday amp; Thursday, Jan. 4 and 5, SKCTC; attend a single day for an 8-hour certification, or both days for a 16-hour certification; must have Kentucky Underground Miners Card

Walk-ins are welcome at all trainings, but registration is strongly encouraged.

All trainings are taught by a Kentucky certified instructor, qualified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration as an instructor for the subject(s) to be taught. The Kentucky Coal Academy does not provide other services such as drug testing and card issuance.
